Tip #1021

Hi everyone, this is a short article I wrote recently for the Canadian Society of Clinical Hypnosis newsletter,  "Entrancing News". Dr. Lee Pulos , the head of the society felt that others might be interested in this bit of personal research that I have done. It may be of interest to list members as well

About  two years ago, I read with great interest Dr. Edgar Barnett’s paper describing his discovery that the subconscious mind is easily accessible without the use of  conventional hypnotic inductions in any form.  Forget about light trance versus deep trance states, whether 7.38 Hz is the optimal  theta level for therapeutic change...just get down to work ...with the client looking at you open-eyed, apparently at Beta or possible in a light trance state that occurred spontaneously. This was an exciting discovery.  Dr. Barnett would have the patient stare at their hand while ideomotor signals were established and employed.  The fixation on the hand distracted the conscious mind and the subconscious started it’s ideomotor responses.  No more 30 minutes of Ericksonian inductions required...and this comes from a family physician who grew frustrated with the lack of success that psychiatry was having with his referrals.  He took it upon himself to learn analytical hypnosis and has made a career of getting results for clients when no other form of therapy seemed to help.
Next I met Dr. Larry Nims who essentially repeated the message of Dr.Barnett...the subconscious is waiting and willing and easily accessible without the hypnotic ritual most of us have subscribed to over the years.  Dr. Nims was using arm muscle testing instead of ideomotor responses but the therapeutic approaches were very similar.  Dr. Nims is a clinical psychologist who is well versed in standard hypnotic techniques, so such a claim deserves some attention.
If you are involved in the so called “Energy Therapy” field to any degree, you are probably aware of the confusion over the dynamics of the process.  Some of the converted swear allegiance to the electro-magnetic spectrum approach and a minority believe it has something to do with the subconscious and pure intention.  Dr.Nims is of the latter opinion and with good reason.  His initial exposure to these exotic techniques was, like so many in this field, through training with Dr. Roger Callahan.  Dr. Nims eventually used only 3 accupressure points instead of the myriad of algorithms that Dr.Callahan rigidly adhered to. After a year or so of having clients patiently tap at these points and getting very satisfactory results, he decided to remove the tapping entirely and just direct suggestions to the subconscious mind overtly...the new label became “instant BSFF”.  I strongly suspect that “instant EFT” is readily achievable also.  He discovered that his results were just as satisfactory and the physical tapping process was just cosmetic or a catalyst for subconscious responses.  The true dynamics involved the subconscious and nothing else according to Dr. Nims.
Over the past 35 years I have been involved in traditional hypnotic approaches, favoring analytical hypnosis over a lot of script reading and direct suggestion therapy.  I trained briefly with Dr.Callahan over 10 years ago and attended Lee Pulos’ TFT training before he got involved with EFT.  EFT proved to be decidedly more user-friendly than TFT and for a time I was quit involved with it.  After my exposure to Drs. Barnett and Nims, however, I discovered that their approaches seemed to be faster and more efficient, all other variables being equal. (Personal bias might be making the playing field a little uneven here, if one must do these comparisons.) EFT alone is a major improvement and is not  to be discredited...however, I am now very comfortable using an eclectic mix of  techniques...Be Set Free Fast (BSFF) developed by Dr. Nims, EFT developed by Gary Craig, and that great old stand-by, old-fashioned self-hypnosis

There are a couple of unusual aspects of BSFF that should be mentioned.  Rather than work on individual problems and aspects of problems as is routine in EFT, BSFF allows a subconscious “short- cut” to work collectively on the entire issue.  At first, this was a little shocking to me.  After all, we may be talking an entire lifetime of emotional turmoil contained in one issue.  However, not only does this “short-cut” work effectively most of the time, but it also seems to have permanence.  What shocked me even more was a report from Dr. Nims on his web list, that he had discovered that... when the subconscious refuses to allow this “short cut”...this can be treated and corrected...and the “short cut” becomes functional.  Even as I write this, I still find it mind-boggling!
In conclusion, I have found the main advantages of BSFF to be:

                        1. Is simpler and faster than EFT

                        2. Is quickly capable of removing ubconscious                             resistance to treatment

                        3. Addresses entire issues rather than aspects                             of a problem

                        4. Places a strong emphasis on elimination of                             anger and promotion of forgiveness

                        5. Seems to be just as capable of eliciting permanent changes as any other form of energy work (No one has done the empirical research in this area to date, so it is just an educated guess on my part.  I have checked back 12-16 months with some clients and found no relapse.  (Follow-up is laborious and I must admit that it's impossible to make comparisons with other therapies' re:permanency.)

Thanks,
Gary Lowe

*note: BSFF still has its’ problems  with clients that don’t get satisfactory results (as happens with all energy therapies) whether due to dissociation or energy toxins or whatever.  Don Eliums, a San Fransisco area psychologist has headed a research group over the last 3 years, or so, that are trying to unravel this mystery. He made an initial presentation of their findings recently in Toronto and will update the study this May in Phoenix.

Many are awakening to the fact that a major new paradigm in counselling psychology is developing.  It is so new that the research committee is only a few years old and empirical evidence is scanty, but the anecdotal evidence is overwhelming.  I encourage you to check these websites for further information or contact me directly if you require more details on my experience. I have a copy of Dr. Barnett’s paper that I can email you if you desire.  He has given me permission to disseminate this information.
