Case Study #1005  - Fear of Flying and related Aspects

This was a very unusual and interesting case.  It highlights how if / when  aspects of problems are not addressed, healing and resolution do not occur.

My client, lets call him Michael, had approached me a couple of years ago when I was still new at using my EFT skills.  Michael was an extroverted fun loving person.  Recently he had developed an intense fear of flying.  This was indeed a classical phobia and Michael exhibited the range of symptoms at the mere thought or suggestion that he get on a plane.  The interesting fact was that he had developed this phobia very late in life when he was in his mid-40's.  This was not a result of any traumatic experiences during frequent flights he had to make for his business.

I approached it by tapping on all aspects of flying; pre-boarding, belting-up, taking-off, during-flight, examining what he saw, heard, felt, smelt and tasted, etc.  Nothing seemed to bring down his SUDS related to this fear.  So I thought I'd try another approach.  How about his childhood? Had anything occurred then to bring about this phobia now; what traumatic experiences could be triggering this?  No Luck.  I was stumped.

Anyway, what seems obvious now, was not then.  So I asked him "what happened in your life just before the first panic attack you experienced to do with flying?"  Ask the obvious question and get the answer!

Michael told me that he had an affair with a woman on his last trip overseas.  Michael was over-come with guilt about this relationship because he dearly loved his wife of 20 years and would not want to hurt her.  However, she never traveled with Michael and was a total homebody whereas he liked to travel and socialize.  Michael had tried to persuade her to accompany him on his numerous business trips without success.  He was torn apart.  A part of him wanted to party and have fun and since his wife wouldn’t join him he had to party on his own; and a part of him wanted to be with his wife.  So he had got himself into a tight little bind.  He could only party on his own because she would not join him.  He could not get what he wanted whether he was with his wife or without her.

So we tapped on the part of him that wanted to party and the part of him that wanted to be with his wife. He tapped on all the aspects of this bind, the past, present and the future.  He tapped on what the consequences would be when he shared his indiscretions with his wife.  It would free him of his quilt and she would probably leave him.  He would still not get what he wanted.

Michael finally shared this with his wife.  They parted company.  She never liked the amount of socializing that Michael did.  He had found his life boring having to restrain himself from socializing, as he wanted.

Strangely enough, Michael's phobia of flying disappeared altogether.
