Tapping and parts Integration
At the end of October 2007, I presented at the EFT Master’s Showcase in
Sydney. I wanted to really add value to what people would gain and learn
from my demonstration using EFT. All 6 presenters were allotted one hour
and 15 minutes each. This time period would include questions and
answers as well.
I thought long and hard about what aspect to present using EFT. There
are so many ways in which EFT dovetails in with so many other mainstream
and alternative modalities. In the end I chose to show how EFT can be
used so very effectively in a ‘double bind’ situation where a person
feels an inner conflict and as if there are separate ‘parts’ inside
of the person creating the problems.
Since I was first up and had only arrived the night before I had not
been able to scout the gathering to find a ready and willing participant
who would come up on stage for the demonstration. So, I spent the first
10 minutes explaining what a double bind situation is considered to be.
Then I asked for a volunteer and some one in the first row put his hand
up readily. Let’s call him Sam. Sam was stuck because he couldn’t make a
decision about some investments. If he went one way, he said he would
not feel ‘good’ about it and if he went the other way, he would still
not feel ‘good’ about the decision. So he was in a bind, damned if he
did and damned if he didn’t..
I explained to the audience that the first thing to do was to establish
that there was a double bind where the person felt ‘stuck’ about a
problem. Once done, then the next step is to separate the 2 ‘identities’
and get the client to define and describe each ‘part’, what it looks
like, feels like, sounds like, dresses like, body language, age, etc.
The two ‘parts’ are externalized and positioned one on the left and the
other on the right hand side. Then I ask the client to give me a rating
from 0 – 10 on each of them. The ratings could be the same or different.
Sometimes one ‘part’ is definite stronger than the other. One part is
controlling the behaviour which the client wants to change or overcome.
I either tap on the client or get them to tap along with me. We tap on
all the negative aspects of either personality till the client feels
accepting of one or both the parts. I suggest to the client that while
tapping the client have a conversation with the parts, one at a time and
ask what the positive intention is for the particular behaviour. NLP
practitioners will immediately recognize this process. One a benefit is
established for either behaviours, then the task is to ask each part if
it could work with the other so that the client can move ahead, and
change old patterns. Tapping all the while the negotiations are being
worked out, noticing how the client starts to relax and accept both
parts.
The last section of this process is of course to bring the two parts
together, to get them to integrate and become one. Using the
visualization technique to have the client imagine the two separate
parts walking towards each other and embracing when the meet. Asking the
clients to imagine that the parts melt into one another and become one,
a new part, made up of all the desirable and valuable traits of each
part, so that there is a new and vibrant strength in the ‘new part’.
Tapping all the time as the client visualizes the integration and asking
the client to take in a deep breath and breathing in the new part into
themselves. Have the client visualize that the new part will settle
right into them, cause that’s where it belongs, stronger, and wiser and
more confident than ever. Imagining that the changes will be immediate,
unconscious, and natural. Each and every cell in the clients body will
just know what to do and how.
If the client wishes to share this new image, vision, feeling have them
describe what the integration is like for them.
At the Showcase, it was so evident to the client and the audience as I
took him through the process, separating the energies and patterns and
reintegrating them. Even before I could completely finish the client was
way ahead of me and saying the he had the problem fixed, he know exactly
what he was going to do.
